Now as with clothing for any outdoor activity the layer system as used by the military is the most flexible and practical. A big heavy waterproof top layer is not very flexible and too bulky to work in. The British forces breathable waterproof layer is ideal. Available as army surplus it is a single thickness garment in camouflage with no pockets. This is a great feature because the jacket is meant to be worn under the outer layer. The result is a thin smock type outer layer that gets wet through but dries quickly, and a second layer that is waterproof, breathable and windproof. This has the effect of stopping the breathable layer from getting too wet. Waterproof breathable materials can be cold when wet but by wearing it as a second layer this problem is removed.
